On the back of her ground breaking chamber opera Sweet Death for the Melbourne International Festival (Chamber Made Opera), and studies in sound at the Australian Film and Television School, Andrée Greenwell established Green Room Music (GRM) in 1997, as a platform for the creation and production of innovative performance and screen works. GRM projects feature original music composition, bringing together artists and musicians who would not ordinarily work together, resulting in music experiences that are unique hybrids.
Since its inception, GRM has engaged over 100 outstanding creative and performing artists from Australia's film, television, theatre and music industries, creating works in presentation partnerships with Australia's leading performing arts organisations, including:
the Sydney Opera House Producers Unit, Arts House North Melbourne, Riverside, City of Sydney, Melbourne Festival, Sydney Writers Festival, Sydney Festival, the NSW Film and Television Office, Vivid NSW, and the ABC Radio National Music and Drama Units.
The cross-genre short films LAQUIEM: a suicide drowning in a hydro-commissioned lake and MEDUSAHEAD: a video opera clip for decapitated soprano and 3D animated snakes, directed and composed by Greenwell, screened at a total of 23 international film and digital arts festivals in France, Holland and Australia. Long form music theatre and multidisciplinary concert works include:
GOTHIC, The Seymour Centre, Vivid NSW; The Hanging of Jean Lee, Sydney Opera House, and Arts House, North Melbourne; DREAMING TRANSPORTATION: Voice Portraits of the First Women of White Settlement at Port Jackson, Sydney Opera House & Riverside, Parramatta, Sydney Festival; The Villainelles, Performance Space, Carriageworks with Sydney writers Festival, also Arts House, North Melbourne; and LAQUIEM: Tales from the Mourning of the Lac Women, The Studio, Sydney Opera House.
Currently, Andrée is developing the chamber opera Three Marys with a libretto by Christine Evans, based upon a medieval myth. The project has received support from Queensland Performing Arts Centre, Opera Queensland, the Australian Cultural Fund, the Confederation of International Festivals of Australia, the Australia Council for the Arts and Create NSW. Additionally, the completion of the libretto is supported by Christine's receipt of a prestigious fellowship from the Howard Foundation, Brown University, Rhode Island.
Green Room Music acknowledges the Gadigal people as the traditional owners of the lands where we live and work. We pay our respects to Elders Past and Present.
